The number 250 carries the oldest call to American unity. Benjamin Franklin cut this serpent into pieces in 1754, each segment marked for a colony, beneath two words that left no middle ground: Join, or Die. The snake coils through the figures, the colonies named one by one, the warning as plain now as it was then. A divided people falls. A united people endures. The founding generation chose union, and the republic followed.
