In the summer of 1776, the committee set down the case for independence and closed it with a pledge: our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor. Fifty-six men signed it knowing the cost. The number 250 holds them at the table, the document still wet, the republic not yet won. They pledged everything. We carry the same pledge still.
